Title:  Magnificent Me

Subject Matter and Level:  2nd Grade Reading and Math

Instructional Designer:  Kris Malloy

Description of the Unit: This unit is designed to extend students' understanding of themselves and their world.  All students are unique.  Therefore, the students will apply what they learn about themselves to a variety of engaged learning activities.

Before the unit begins each students needs to bring a baby picture and their birth information.  They also will have filled out an "All About Me" sheet.

Lesson 1 - Celebrate "Me" Day

Objective: The students will use past experiences to make predictions about their classmates.
Materials: Baby pictures, PowerPoint, and worksheet
Activities: The boys and girls will watch the "Who's This Baby?" PowerPoint that was created by the teacher.  The PowerPoint will be designed so that each child will have a slide that includes their baby picture and two clues about themselves. We will pause after each slide and the boys and girls will predict which classmate the slide refers to.  There will be a class name word bank on the bottom of the worksheet.  After we've completed the PowerPoint, we will view it a second time to check the accuracy of their answers.
Assessment: We will discuss as a group what strategies they used to make their predictions.  We will also use the worksheet as an assessment.

Lesson 2 - Ramona Forever

Objective: The students will identify the title, author, genre, and main idea of the novel excerpt from the book, Ramona Forever.
Materials: The Catch A Sunflake Series from Macmillan/McGraw-Hill.  You could also read Ramona Forever orally to the students.
Activities: The students will read the story orally and make a chart showing the pros and cons of having brothers and sisters.

The students will write a paragraph in which they explain the three hardest things about growing up and why.

Assessment: Journaling and student participation

Lesson 3 - It's A Baby

Objective: The students will design birth announcements for themselves.
Materials:  Hallmark Greetings Workshop CD and disk with scanned baby pictures on it.
Activities: Each student will create a baby announcement for himself or herself.

The students will insert their baby picture into the baby announcement.

Assessment: Baby announcement checklist

Lesson 4 - Measure Me

Objective: Students will be able to distinguish between standard and nonstandard units of measurement.
Materials: Have a variety of hands-on materials for the students to use for measuring.  You will also need rulers.
Activities: Read the book Measuring Penny by: Loreen Leedy.  This book is a great resource for introducing standard and nonstandard units of measurement.

Have the boys and girls measure objects in the room using standard and nonstandard units of measurement.

Complete the worksheets on standard and nonstandard units of measurement.

Assessment: The boys and girls will turn in their measurements of the objects they measured in our classroom.  They will also journal on the differences between standard and nonstandard units of measurement.

Lesson 5 - Foot Fun

Objective: The students will be able to classify shoes into groups using a variety of different rules.
Materials: Lots of shoes
Activities: We will start off by reading the book How Big is a Foot by: Rolf Myller.

The boys and girls will take turns sorting the shoes into two groups.  The other boys and girls will have to try and figure out the rule that they are using to sort the shoes into the two groups.

The students will trace a pattern of their foot and cut it out.  They will then measure objects in our classroom with their foot pattern.

We will have "foot" cookies at milk break for a snack.  These can be made with sugar cookie dough and a foot cookie cutter.

Assessment: Student participation in all the activities and they will also hand in their sheet on the objects they measured.

Lesson 6 - "Me" Babies

Objective: The students will make "Me" babies to represent their birth statistics.
Materials: The materials needed for this project are provided as a link at the bottom of this section.
Activities: The students will use their estimation skills to make comparisons between the different babies.
Assessment: The students will make at least five comparisons dealing with the birth weights of the class babies. They will use >, <, and the = sign.  For example: Mary < John.

We will use the KWL chart to guide us through this unit.  It is amazing how little the students know about themselves and how motivated them become when we get started on the unit.
